Conversation is a site-specific interactive new media artwork that invites the public into this civic space and engages them in a meaningful way that reflects the open and transparent government the City of Palo Alto strives to be. It is a dynamic visual representation of democracy unfolding in real time inside the doors of City Hall. While offering a unique artistic experience, Conversation celebrates freedom of speech and expression, and invites visitor interaction. The custom interface scans social media and posts global, national, and local news feeds and allows users to respond with comments and photos through the internet or an on-site touchscreen display. The public is invited to join the conversation online at www.conversationpaloalto.org or on Twitter using a hashtag #ConversationPaloAlto.
Narduli Studio is an interdisciplinary practice working at the intersection of art, architecture, technology, and public space. The design team is led by Los Angeles-based architect and artist Susan Narduli. At its creative core is a belief in an ideas-driven approach, exploring new technological paradigms to reflect the diversity of context and experience that shape our modern perspective. Narduli Studio serves as a catalyst for thoughtful discourse on the relationship between the individual and the environment, and has been at the forefront of an expansive interpretation of how technology can bridge our understanding of the physical and virtual worlds.
“My work has never been defined by media. I often use ephemeral phenomena that can be understood through movement and that change over time.” Susan Narduli
In 2017 Americans for the Arts honored Conversation among 49 outstanding, national public art projects created in the United States in 2016.
